Heavenly Angels

Heavenly Angels

The greek word for Angel is : “Angelos” and  the English word “Angel” derived from it. In Greek the term was used for “God’s messenger”. It is believed that Angels serve God as messengers to communicate God's will to men. Bible gives us very little information on Angels, however they are mentioned in both Old and New Testament more than 100 times.

Where did angels come from? The answer is very hard to find.
Let’s look at :  Colossians 1:16-17, the scripture speaks about the creation :
“For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” Maybe God created Angels right after he had created heavens and earth.

Hebrew word : “Malak” means messenger as well. A messenger of the divine. Angels do not have bodies like us, they are spirits.  Daniel 7:10, the scripture gives no definite numbers but it is obvious they are countless in their number. “A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.”

Angels are major figures in many cultures and religions. Since ancient times, mankind has believed in the existence of angels. At different periods in history and across many cultures, Angels have been represented as heavenly beings. The primitive man believed that there were no good or bad spirits. A spirit had powers, called manna.

Whether in Christianity, Judaism or in Islam stories are told of Angels appearing in vision to holy man and woman.  In Christian religion an angel is a member of the celestial hierarchy this is a ranking which comes directly below archangels. A fallen angel is a devil, like Satan himself; whereas a guardian angel is a protector. Psalm 91: 11  “ For he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee, in all thy ways.”

May the Angels protect you…
“Angel of God, my guardian dear
to whom God's love commits me here.
Ever this day/night be at my side
to light, to guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.”
Traditional Catholic prayer to one's guardian angel.
